| COINS AND MEDALLIONS HISTORY
There are several stories regarding the history of the challenge coin. One such story is they originated in WWI, where a wealthy lieutenant ordered medallions struck in bronze and presented them to his unit. One young pilot secured his medallion in a leather pouch which he wore around his neck. Shortly after acquiring the medallion his aircraft was damaged by ground fire. He was forced to land behind enemy lines and was captured by a German patrol that removed all identification from him except for his leather pouch. One night during a bombardment he escaped. Eventually, he stumbled onto a French outpost. He had no identification to prove his allegience, but he did have his leather pouch containing the medallion. He showed the medallion to his would-be executioners and one of the French recognized the insignia, delaying his execution long enough to confirm his identity. Instead of shooting him they gave him a bottle of wine!
This is where the tradition of challenging comes into play. When back at his squadron, it became tradition that all members carry the medallion or coin. In order to ensure that this was being done the "Challenge" was initiated.
*a challenger would ask to see the medallion or coin. If the challenged could not produce the medallion, they were required to buy a drink of choice for the member who challenged them. If the challenged member produced their medallion, then the challenging member was forced to pay for the drink.
